On The Bus
On the Bus School Program
On the Bus is a fun and interactive introduction to the Peterborough Transit System provided to Grade 3 classes in the city of Peterborough. This program focuses on active and efficient transportation choices, and is tailored to meet specific curriculum expectations.
This 1.5-hour workshop begins when the City Bus arrives at your school to pick you up! As we travel around Peterborough, students practice their map reading skills and develop a greater knowledge of their local community. The trip includes a stop at Peterborough’s Ecology Park for some outdoor games related to transportation choices, air quality and climate change, as well as a stop at the Peterborough Transit Authority’s Bus Barn for a chance to interview the bus driver!
On the Bus was developed more than a decade ago by Active and Safe Routes to School Peterborough as a way to introduce children to public transit. The program generates excitement and enthusiasm about riding the bus, and also encourages younger students to begin making connections between their transportation behaviour and its environmental impact. This program is among the most successful programs offered by Active and Safe Routes to School Peterborough, with all schools participating annually.
This workshop is offered during the months of May and June. Registration opens to Grade 3 classes in January. Other grades will be placed on a wait list and contacted at the end of April if space is still available. On the Bus is offered as a free program thanks to the generosity of the City of Peterborough and our partners.
On the Bus will not be offered in 2017. Please check back in January 2018 for registration details.
